To boost remittance earnings

Friday, 19 December 2008

BANGLADESHI missions abroad need to attend to the problems of the country's expatriate workers. For that, the missions need to be properly geared. Specially, corruption in them should be flushed out. Each mission should be staffed with competent labour attaches and efficient supporting staff. Their work should be closely monitored and evaluated. Accountability should be in-built in their employment contracts.
Like in the other subcontinental countries, official training opportunities for the workers keen to go abroad must increase. The aim of such training ought to be creation of skilled manpower in diverse areas for overseas job markets. Those going abroad on employment must be prevented from accepting lower wages or salaries. Financial institutions should be encouraged to run schemes to extend easy loans for the workers to help them in the payment of their fees to recruitment agencies and meet other costs.
