Tobacco cultivation still lucrative business

MEHERPUR, July 31 (BSS): Tobacco cultivation still remains a lucrative business among the farmers of the district despite the launching of a strong campaign against the uses of tobacco in the country.
Tobacco farmers said they get more money by cultivating tobacco than any other crops on their lands. They can earn about Tk 35,000 from one acre of land by cultivating tobacco.
There is also scope to fetch a huge amount of foreign exchange by exporting tobacco abroad that also inspired the cultivators in this respect, sources said.
The British-American Tobacco Bangladesh (BATB) alone exported a huge amount tobacco last year, the source added.
The purchasing rate of per kilogramme virginia tobacco is-grade-1 Tk 59.25, grade-2 Tk 5475, grade-3 Tk 44.75, grade-4 Tk 39.75, grade-5 Tk 37.75, grade-6 Tk 35.75 and grade-7 Tk 33.75.
