Awami League (AL) Leader Tofail Ahmed, MP, has accused the BNP of conspiring to foil the by-election in Bhola-3 constituency, reports UNB.
Tofail, who is the party's coordinator of the by-election conducting committee, made the allegation when he was briefing journalists on recent clashes between the supporters of the BNP and AL at Farashganj of Tojumuddin over the by-election slated for April 24.
He alleged BNP cadres led by Nazimuddin Alam launched an attack on AL peaceful rally from his motorcade. "BNP-created violent incident was pre-planned," he added.
Tofail said he first came to know about the violence when an official of the US embassy in Dhaka telephoned him to know about the incident.
Tofail, member of the AL advisory committee, expressed his apprehension that BNP and its allies may stage similar violent incidents to foil the election.
He said they were provoking the AL leaders and activists to start clashes but AL leaders and activists were asked to remain calm.
