Tonga to become WTO member next month

Friday, 29 June 2007

GENEVA, June 28 (Xinhua): The South Pacific kingdom of Tonga will become the 151st member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) next month, the Geneva-based organisation said yesterday.
Tonga, one of the poorest countries in the world, submitted " its acceptance of the terms and conditions of membership" Wednesday, the WTO said.
According to related rules, the tiny archipelagic country will formally become a WTO member a month later, on July 27.
With a population of about 117,000, Tonga's economy mainly depends on agriculture exports. The country finished its WTO accession negotiations at the end of 2005.
