Opening of the flyover over the Tongi junction rail station scheduled for December has now become uncertain following a sudden rise in project cost at the fag end of its construction work.
Official sources said the flyover might not be completed within the stipulated time in December due to shortage of budget.
Roads and Highways Department has already sought an approval of an additional Tk 20 million for the Tk 200 million Tongi flyover project.
Official sources said the cost has escalated because of utility shifting and last moment change in the design.
They said the service length of the flyover has to be increased from its actual design.
A meeting of RHD and Planning Commission was held Wednesday and a delegation of the Planning Commission is likely to visit the Tongi flyover site soon.
Sources said as the revised project cost needs approval of the ECNEC, its implementation in time has become uncertain.
Design of the Tongi flyover has already been changed before the approval. Sources said the height of the flyover has to be increased to 22 feet (7.2 metre) from usual 18 feet (5.5 metre).
The railway authority had objected to the original height of the flyover at the time of taking vertical clearance in 2006. It raised the required height to 22 feet considering the use of double container goods train on the rail track in the future.
The Tongi flyover project was taken to ease the traffic movement on both sides of the Tongi Junction enabling the vehicles coming to and from northern and northwestern districts to cross the station uninterrupted RHD has been implementing the 550-metre bridge with approach roads in Tongi and Kaliganj.
