Top Sports upset Ctg MSC in opener

CHITTAGONG, May 2 (UNB) : Top Sports of Noakhali upset Chittagong Mohammedan SC by 33 runs in the inaugural match of the much-hyped Habib Group Port City League (PCL) Twenty20 Cricket Saturday at the MA Aziz Stadium, the first Test venue in the port city.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad Ali Sarker formally inaugurated the nine-day-long high-budgeted PCL T20 Cricket, first of its kind in the country, arranged in the style of India's IPL, amid huge enthusiasm among the local fans in a 25-minute colourful opening ceremony.
In his inaugural speech, the state minister for Youth and Sports assured the port city organisers and fans to give at least one World Cup Cricket match in Chittagong in 2011.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Hasan Mahmud, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Lt Gen Sina Ibn Jamali and Shamsul Haque Chowdhury MP also spoke at the function chaired by PCL President AZM Nasiruddin.
In the day's opener, Top Sports captain Sanwar Hossain won the toss and opened the innings first to score a fighting total of 158 runs for 4 in 20 overs.
Opener Nazmus Sadat contributed unconquered 91 runs off 57 balls with nine fours and six sixes to be adjudged man of the match.
National cricketer Mahmudullah Riyad scored run-a-ball 30 while skipper Sanwar Hossain made 19.
Pakistani cricketer Namal Abbas grabbed two wickets while Sanjamul Hoque and Mohammad Mithun took one wicket each.
In reply, Chittagong Mohammedan SC were dismissed for 125 runs in 18 overs with Kaiser scoring 53 runs off 34 balls.
Tournament's highest paid player Tamim Iqbal's Chittagong Abahani Limited will meet Chittagong Brothers Union in a key match today (Sunday) at 2pm while Dada Warriors face Dhaka Sports Club Tigers earlier in the day at 10 am, both at the MA Aziz Stadium.
Country's renowned singer from Chittagong Tapan Chowdhury pairing with local vocalist Haimanti Rakshit, riding on a mobile vehicle shaped as traditional "Sampan" (local boat), sang patriotic songs much to the enjoyment of the local fans.
Satellite TV Channel ATN Bangla telecast the opening ceremony and the opening match between Chittagong Mohammedan and Noakhali Top Sports live from the games venue.
Eight teams from Chittagong Division, split into two groups, are taking part in the heavyweight meet participated by top cricketers of the country alongside some leading cricketers of the sub-continent.
Participating teams:
Group A - Chittagong Abahani Ltd, Chittagong Mohammedan SC, Chittagang Brothers Union and Noakhali Top Sports.
Group B - Dada Warriors, Pirates of Chittagong, Ispahani SC and Dhaka Sports Club (DSC) Tigers.
Later, two top teams from both groups will play in the semi-final on May 9, while the final match will be held on May 10, reports UNB.
