Top taxpayers seek CIP status

Top taxpayers have sought CIP (commercially important person) status in recognition to their contribution in the national exchequer.
Talking to the FE, highest taxpayer of the last two consecutive years Nani Gopal Saha said: "I have received a card as a top taxpayer last year which hardly have any influence to recognise me as an important person in the society,"
He is owner of Chittagong-based N.G Saha Steel Industries (Pvt) Limited, NGS Cement Industries Limited, NGS Steel Industries Limited and Uttam Oil Mills Limited.
Nani Gopal, who received NBR award as a top taxpayer from Chittagong district, paid nearly Tk 26 million income tax in 2008-09 fiscal under universal self-assessment system.
Nani Gopal, a veteran tax-payer since 1946 has requested the government to allow investment of undisclosed money without imposing any condition to boost investment.
His son Asit Kumar Shaha also received NBR award as top taxpayer for 2008-09.
Md. Sadeque Ullah, another highest taxpayer, reiterated the same view on offering VIP or CIP status for top taxpayers.
"We sought a social recognition as a top and long-term taxpayer. I have been paying income tax since 1969-70 but yet to receive any social status," he said.
Sadeque is owner of Titas Trade International which comprises of customs C&F agents for Chittagong Sea and Air, Dhaka Air, ICD-Kamalpur, Dhaka EPZ and Benapole customs station, contractor, travel agents and tea broker.
The top taxpayers have shared the views with FE in an award giving ceremony in the city where the NBR honoured a total of 350 top and long-term taxpayers.
The revenue board arranged such award giving ceremony for the second time on the occasion of celebrating National Income Tax Day September 15.
