Tornado devastates 4 villages

SHERPUR, May 9 (UNB): Tornado tore through four villages of Gosaipur union of Sribordi Upazila early Sunday razing houses, uprooting trees, damaging standing boro crops and leaving at least a dozen people wounded.
Sultan Mia, resident of Bharera village told that the storm at a speed of more than 100-km an hour pounded Gilagaccha, Badekuna, Joyenkhila, Dhatua, Bharera and Shankar Ghose villages.
Panic ran high among the villagers during the calamity that lasted about five minutes beginning at 4-30 am.
Extensive damage has been caused to standing boro paddy, vegetables and fruits.
Those injured in house collapse and by flying saucers have received treatment in the upazila health complex and private clinics.
The adjacent areas of Rani Shankail, Singabaruna and Sribordi upazilas experienced heavy hailstorm accompanied by rains.
The hailstorm caused extensive damage to boro paddy ready for harvest.
UNO Toufiq Al Mahmud visited the affected areas. He said upazila chairmen have been assessing the damages and making a list of worst affected families for giving relief.
