RANGAMATi, Dec 2: Calling upon all pro-peace treaty forces to be united to wage tougher movement for full implementation of the CHT Peace Accord, the Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) and its front organisations today observed the 12th anniversary of landmark peace accord in Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari simultaneously.
They observed the day through holding rallies, public meetings as well as cultural programmes across the CHT region.
In Rangamati, a public meeting was held at the premises of Rajbari Gymnasium in the town.
Presided over by PCJSS chief Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma, the rally was also addressed, among others, by President of Bangladesh Workers Party Rashed Khan Menon MP, Gono Forum's presidium member Pankaj Bhattacharya, secretary of Bangladesh Adivasi Forum (BAF) Sanjib Drong, presidium member of Bangladesher Communist Party comrade Md Shah Alam, organizing secretary of PCJSS Shaktipada Tripura, leader of CHT Mohila Samity Suprova Chakma, president of Pahari Chhattra Parishad (PCP) Udayan Tripura.
Information and publicity secretary of PCJSS Mongal Kumar Chakma gave the welcome speech.
As the peace accord was not implemented fully, the problem of CHT was not resolved for the last decade, Santu Larma said.
We waited for a decade anticipating full implementation of the deal, but the past successive governments did not execute the treaty. Rather, the deal was violated, Santu said.
Urging the government to ban United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), the anti-peace treaty organisation, Larma said one of the setback in the process of implementation of peace agreement is UPDF. Armed cadres of UPDF are killing the leaders and activists of PCJSS and collecting extortions from innocent people.
Other anti-peace treaty forces are backing the UPDF, and hatching conspiracy to annul the peace deal, Santu alleged.
Urging the government to immediately stop the 'Operation Uttaran' in CHT, Larma said the indigenous people were severely harassed and tortured by the army and many leaders and activists of PCJSS have also faced the same fate.
Urging the government for full execution of peace accord, Rashed Khan Menon said without implementation of it, peace will not be established in CHT. We don't want to see more disturbances in hills as the present AL-led grand alliance government signed the deal for bringing permanent peace in the hills.
He urged the government to activate the 'CHT Land Commission' for resolving land disputes in CHT, what he said is one of the most complicated issues in the treaty.
