Trade shutdown in Akhaura land port
Sunday, 8 June 2014
Activities at the Akhaura land port have come to a halt due to a strike by Indian businessmen. Goods were not imported or exported through this land port since Sunday morning as traders of India's Agartala land port went into a strike, said Mohammed Rajib Bhuiyan, president of Akhaura Importers-Exporters Association. Businesses were disrupted in the land port on Saturday following a clash between Indian Border Security Force personnel and locals of Agartala on Friday, said Monir Hossain, general secretary of C&F Agent Association of Akhaura port. The Agartala Importers-Exporters Association called for the indefinite strike from Sunday in protest against fining Indian rupees 5,000 for parking a truck in the port, Hossain said. He said they would make arrangements on Monday to offload goods from over 50 trucks stranded in the port, according to bdnews24.com.
