Trademark (Amendment) Bill placed in parliament

A bill titled ‘Trademark (Amendment) Bill, 2015’ was placed in Parliament on Tuesday to correct some clerical mistakes of the previous law and extend the timeframe for resolving any dispute under it. Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu placed the Bill in the House and it was sent to the respective Parliamentary Standing Committee for further scrutiny. The committee was asked to submit its report within 30 days. The previous bill, passed in 2009, says any dispute over registration shall be resolved within 120 days, but the proposed bill increases the timeframe to 360 days. In the objective of the bill it was stated that as Bangladesh attained the membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and has been a signatory to the Paris Convention and Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), it has the obligation to follow these agreements, according to a news agency.
