BRAHMANBARIA, Dec 23: Traders in the district have made huge profits due to higher market prices of hides of sacrificial animals this year.
According to the sources, the local traders have purchased about 1.20 million pieces of hides of various animals from the people and have supplied those to the local 'arats'- warehouses.
The small traders have purchased bullock and cow hides from the people at a rate between Tk 1,800 and Tk 3,000 while goats and sheep skins between Tk 500 and Tk 800 per piece, depending on their size.
They have sold those hides to the 'arats' making 20 per cent to 25 per cent profit on an average.
The local traders did not face any problem in purchasing hides this year as the commercial banks as well as the tannery owners provided them with adequate funds.
Meanwhile, the district administration as well as Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) earlier had taken adequate security measures and maintained strong vigilance along Akhaura and Kasba border areas to foil smuggling of hides.
