Trading in city's kitchen markets yet to pick up after Eid

Trading in the city's kitchen markets have not yet picked up after the Eid vacation while prices of most of the essentials remained more or less static Friday.
Customers were thin in some of the city's major commodity markets that this correspondent visited as a good number of vendors had not reopen after the festival.
Most of the traders who went to their village homes for celebrating the Eid ul Azha festival are yet to return to the city, a trader at Malibagh kitchen market said, and added that the number of customers is understandably low.
He, however, expressed the hope that retail trading will gain momentum within the next few days.
"We are expecting the customers to return for shopping from Sunday next," said Rahim Ullah, another trader in the city's Shantinagra bazaar.
In the city's retail markets, traders said minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 39-Tk 40 per kg and nazirshail at Tk 38-Tk 40 per kg, remaining unchanged from their previous rates.
Apart from this, they said coarse varieties of rice, especially BR-28 and 29 and pari, were selling at Tk 28-Tk29 per kg during the last week, remaining unchanged from their previous prices, salesmen in the city's Shantinagar and Khilgaon markets said.
Traders said prices of local and imported lentil remained unchanged at their previous rates in the city markets. A kilogram of local lentil was selling at Tk 108-Tk 110 while imported lentil between Tk 88 and Tk 90.
Vendors said prices of vegetables items came down to some extent last week as their supply boosted with arrival of many seasonal varieties and demand after Eid dropped sharply.
A wholesale trader in Kawran bazaar said: "We've asked our agent in different parts of the country to send less quantity of vegetable items in the city as there is very poor demand of perishable items."
On Friday, a kilo of lady's finger was selling at Tk 28-Tk32, brinjal at Tk 25-30, papaw Tk 9-Tk 12 and a medium sized cauliflower at Tk 10-15, according to the traders in the city's retail markets.
Cucumber was being sold at Tk 30-Tk-40 per kg, tomato at Tk 60-Tk 70 per kg, bean 24-Tk30, radish Tk 15-Tk 20, bitter gourd Tk 25-Tk30 and potato Tk 18 per kg (old stock) and Tk 35- Tk 40 (new arrivals).
The market sources said prices of local and imported onion that increased by Tk 4 to Tk 8 per kg at the retail level in the city ahead of Eid-ul-Azha was selling between Tk 35 and Tk 48 in the city's retail markets.
Prices of non-brand edible oil including soybean and super palm which also increased by Tk 4 to Tk 6 per litre ahead of eid was selling between Tk 110-Tk115 per kg and Tk 95- 98 per kg respectively.
During the last week, prices of a five-litre can of edible oil of different brands was selling between Tk 565 to Tk 580 which was at Tk 530-Tk 540 a week ago.
However, prices of poultry birds were Tk 115-Tk120 per kg remaining unchanged during the last week at the retail level in the city. A dozen eggs were selling between Tk 84 and Tk 90 remaining unchanged from their previous prices.
Although prices of most of the essentials remained unchanged after eid, traders said rate of different varieties of fish increased to some extent as the demand surged.
