Trading on DSE ends in upbeat mood

Stock prices, led by blue chip issues including banks, pharmaceuticals and power, rose Sunday, the last trading day of the year, due mainly to institutional support.
All the market barometers -- DSE General Index (DGEN), All Share Price Index (DSI) and DSE-20 Index (DS20) -- climbed 13.33 points, 12.72 points and 30.09 points to close at 3017.21, 2535.96 and 2485.86 respectively.
The trading, however, on the bourse began with depressed sentiment, but later ended with upbeat mood.
The total turnover rose to Tk 1.31 billion in the day's trading, dominated by gainers, from the previous Tk 1.23 billion. The total market capitalisation also rose to Tk 742.19 billion from Tk 739.08 billion.
Out of 232 traded issues, 129 advanced, 91 declined and 12 remained unchanged.
The Square Pharmaceuticals was the top turnover leader with its shares worth Tk 159.86 million changing hands. The price of the company that opened at Tk 3679.75 closed higher at Tk 3682.00.
Market sources said the issue of Square group gained on the rumour that the company might issue rights share for its shareholders in the New Year.
Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) was the second turnover leader with Tk 83.90 million followed by United Commercial Bank Limited (UCB) Tk 82.82 million, NBL Tk55.49 million, Brac Bank Tk 42.80 million, Prime Bank Tk 42.69 million, Islami Bank 40.42 million, Square Textile Tk 40.30, IFIC Tk 35.01 million and Lafarge Surma Cement Tk 34.28 million.
The price of Orion Infusion share fell by 5.54 per cent to Tk 98.00 from opening price at Tk 102.00 on the news that a special court sentenced Orion Group chief Obaidul Karim to life term imprisonment due to embezzlement of fund.
