Tradition of Khatunganj business hub must be restored, says adviser

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 13 (BSS): Bir Protik Faruk E Azam, the adviser to the liberation war affairs and disaster management ministries, said that the old tradition and glory of the country's largest wholesale market Khatunganj must be restored.
The adviser made the comment while speaking as chief guest at a view-exchange meeting with Khatunganj Trade and Industries Association (KTIA) of Chattogram at a local circuit house on Saturday.
Mentioning the mismanagement and irregularities at Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCCI), Faruk-E-Azam said the true businessmen of Chattogram could not play their due role in CCCI in the past.
Khatunganj as a former commodity hub lost its image among traders due to widespread unprofessionalism, and malpractice by a section of local traders, he said. "To improve the situation, traders should find out their own faults and mismanagement in trade," he added.
He said the interim government is working to bring reforms in every sector to build a new Bangladesh.
He urged the businessmen to supplement the government's efforts for reforms in every sector that would contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.
"We want to restore the business tradition in Khatunganj and bring back its lost glory," he added.
Acting president of KTIA and Chairman of BSM Group Abul Bashar Chowdhury presided over the function while Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanom, KTIA General Secretary Sagir Ahmed, its vice president Abdus Salam, joint general secretary Ahmad Rashid Amu and representatives of various professions and business organisations attended in the event.
