MANIKGANJ, June 16: The traditional Hazari Gur of Manikganj has finally been granted Geographical Indication (GI) status.
The Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industries recently issued the GI registration certificate for "Manikganj's Hazari Gur," making it the 64th registered GI product of Bangladesh.
According to relevant sources, the application for GI registration was submitted on February 20, 2024, by the then Deputy Commissioner of Manikganj, Rehena Akter. Following a lengthy evaluation process, the GI registration certificate was officially awarded on June 15, 2026.
Officials said that Hazari Gur has acquired its distinctive characteristics due to Manikganj's unique climate, soil conditions, and the traditional production methods practiced by local date palm sap collectors. In particular, Hazari Gur produced in the Jhitka and Gopinathpur areas of Harirampur Upazila is widely renowned across the country.
The Date Palm Jaggery (gur) is prepared through a special process using the first collection of sap from date palm trees. Producing one kilogram of Hazari Gur requires approximately 10 to 12 liters of raw sap.
