Traffic congestion in front of Mohakhali Bus Terminal
Tuesday, 11 July 2023
Traffic congestion in the road in front of the Mohakhali Inter-district Bus Terminal has become a perennial problem. The media, both print and electronic, have carried stories highlighting the issue, but it has remained unaddressed.
Buses are kept parked on both sides of the road in double lines. Even the U-loop built for smooth vehicular movement is kept occupied through unauthorised parking. Usually, buses belonging to some leaders of Bangladesh Bus Paribahan Malik Samity are seen more frequently than others parked on the road for hours together.
A long tailback from early morning to midnight is a regular sight at Mohakhali. Commuters remain stuck in the long tailback for hours together.
It is all happening before the eyes of the police and Paribhan Samity officials. What is more interesting is that the North City Corporation prefers to be silent spectator of the plight of the commuters.
That should not be the case. The DNCC must ask the bus owners not to park their vehicles on the roads anywhere in the city. They should make their own arrangement to keep buses on the outskirts of the city. Any noncompliance needs to be dealt with sternly. Besides, both the Dhaka north and south city corporations should expedite the process of shifting all the inter-district bus terminals to the periphery of the city. Dhaka that takes pride in introducing metro rail and elevated express way cannot afford tailbacks, that too, due to unruly behaviour of transport operators.
