Traffic jam of Dhaka city

Monday, 9 February 2015

New York being one of the busiest cities in the world, does not suffer from traffic jam as much we do in Dhaka. In the absence of a proper survey, opinions vary regarding the reasons behind so. Some say, it is the population of the city, while others cite faulty roads and excessive vehicles. But I think the main reason is our mindset. The bus drivers pick up and drop passengers here and there, although we have bus stops in all areas of the city.
When a bus driver stops the bus in the middle of the road, vehicles following it get stuck too, creating a jam which has a chain effect. This is often overlooked by our traffic personnel. If we can ensure that every bus stops at designated stoppages, we may be able to reduce the traffic congestion and undesired accidents. Strict rules and regulations must be enforced for all and the traffic police be oriented to make sure that these rules are followed in letter and spirit.
