Traffic jams: Army to the rescue always?
Friday, 18 September 2009
THE traffic jams in our fair capital is so bad that out-of-towners, that is visitors from other towns and cities are appalled by the phenomena. My friend Montu lives in Bogra, which in its own right has grown at a good pace in the past couple of decades. Montu is a frequent visitor to Dhaka because his dear son resides and studies here. I called Montu the other day to enquire about the general situation in Bogra and all he would tell me was about the murderous traffic jams he had encountered in Dhaka city the past few times he had come here staggered over a couple of months! He had encountered them as his bus was entering the capital, he had encountered them in Maghbazar, Bangla Motor, Farm Gate, Dhanmondi, Gulshan, Jhigatota…in fact he encountered them wherever he went, at least he claimed so.
And I had absolutely no reason to disbelieve him, I live here, I know. He actually said that he was so frustrated at times he was near to tears! That may be a bit of an exaggeration (though you never know what is the next man's limit of endurance) but I have myself seen how normal citizens get irritated and them start blasting the jams, the private cars and even the driver of the bus we were travelling in.
For the past few days, that is, since the army has moved in to help control the traffic, what I can see is that the traffic moves, even if it is painfully slow at places, it moves, and there are no bad snarls of any kind. So is this the solution? Is our army going to take care of the traffic from now on?
