FE Report | Friday, 7 March 2014
Key roads in the city's Mohakhali, Banani and Tejgaon areas witnessed nagging gridlock Thursday evening as traffic on the two flyovers at Mohakhali and Banani remained suspended causing immense sufferings to commuters.
Sources said vehicular movement on the streets were kept temporarily suspended because of the beautification work ahead of the ICC World Cup T20, which will start in Dhaka and two other cities of the country on March 16 next.
Hundreds of vehicles were seen stranded on both sides of the key streets for hours in the evening, leaving passengers in trouble.
To avoid traffic congestions, many vehicles like private cars and minibuses were seen using bypasses, which also put extra pressure on the nearby roads. Many passengers were found heading for their respective destinations on foot.
Witnesses said starting from in front of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) at Tejgaon, the nagging traffic congestions spread up to the Kakoli intersection following suspension of traffic on the flyovers.
They, however, expressed their resentment over the sudden suspension of vehicular movement on the flyovers, saying that the authorities could avoid such beautification work during the peak hours to ease the people's sufferings.
When contacted, ADC Traffic (North) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Abdullah Al Mamun claimed that there were no major traffic congestion in the area. He further said although beautification work started in the evening, "we put it on hold later for the sake of smooth traffic.
