Tragedy that could be avoided

Thursday, 7 April 2022

The tragic death of a young man studying in one of Bangladesh's elite universities should raise questions over our social realities. A talented student of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology has recently committed suicide reportedly due to financial crisis. As per media reports, Antu Roy, a third-year student of Textile Engineering Department of KUET had a lot of money in arrears in his dormitory. He returned home to collect the money so that he could repay the arrears. His father failed to arrange the money. Later, he took his own life.
There is nothing more heartbreaking than an avoidable death. This death should not have occurred. Had his fellow students and the teachers of the university shown some understanding of his problem, the tragedy could be avoided. This tragic incident is not just the product of depression, anxiety or frustration. It has to do with poverty. The issue demands serious consideration.
