FE Report
Negligence of linemen at Sayedabad level crossing in the city led to another tragic train accident Wednesday, killing at least seven people and injuring about 25 others.
Police said the accident took place at about 5:15 pm when a Dhaka-bound local train from Narayanganj ploughed into two buses on the level crossing.
The speeding train first hit a passenger bus which was moving towards Jatrabari area from Mirpur over the rail line and then smashed another bus parked close to the line, leaving four people dead on the spot and 20 others injured.
People staying around the busy bus terminal rushed to spot immediately after the incident to recover the injured trapped inside the buses.
They also sent them to various hospitals and clinics for treatment while two critically wounded people succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. Later, another was declared dead at a local hospital soon after arrival.
Identity of the deceased persons could not be known immediately.
Witnesses held the linemen responsible for failure to stop vehicular movement on the crossing as they did not pull down the bars on the level crossing when the train came to pass the area.
They said the passenger bus, after being smashed by the train, rammed into several makeshift fruit shops around the rail line, injuring some vendors.
They also claimed that at least 10 people were killed in the terrible accident but police officials confirmed only seven.
A sub-inspector of Jatrabari police station told the FE that they had received seven dead bodies.
On information, police, RAB and firemen rushed to the spot and conducted rescue operation. Vehicular movement around the Sayedabad bus terminal remained seriously disrupted for two hours.
