Train-bus collision kills 11 bridal guests in Jhenidah

At least 11 people were killed and 50 injured as an express train rammed into a bridal-party bus on the level crossing at Barobazar of Kaliganj upazila in Jhenidah early Friday, report agencies.
The deceased were identified as Sanjoy Kumar, 34, Sudhir Kumar Biswas, 40, Sujoy Kumar, 34, Biplob Biswas, 25, Shovon De, 25, Koushik Das 8, Oishi, 7, Banya Rani, 65, Trisna Rani, 24, and Subal Kumar Biswas, all hailed from Phulahari village in Sailkupa upazila of the district.
The bride and the bridegroom were safe as they were travelling by a microbus.
Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge at Kaliganj police station, said a bus of Toma Paribahan was heading towards Phulahari village in Shailkupa after a marriage ceremony at Sako Mothanpur village when the accident occurred.
"The Khulna-bound 'Simanta Express' from Syedpur of Nilphamari rammed the bus at Barobazar rail-crossing around 3:40am, leaving nine people dead on the spot," says a police account of the tragic accident.
Another person, Ujjal Das, 15, also reportedly succumbed to his injuries at Kaliganj upazila health complex later. The injured were taken to Jhenidah sadar hospital, Jessore General Hospital and Kaliganj local health complex.
"The bus had been pushed about half a kilometre off the spot before the train came to a grinding halt," says a spot account of the bus-train collision.
Rail communications on the Khulna-Dhaka and other routes were suspended for at least seven hours following the accident.
Jhenidah Deputy Commissioner Safiqul Islam, police officials and Awami League Lawmaker of Jhenidah-4 constituency Anwarul Azim Anar, among others, visited the spot.
Barobazar station master Turki Ahmed and gateman Humayan Kabir were suspended in an instant action. Later, they were detained by police for "neglect of duty and responsibilities".
A three-member probe body, headed by Additional District Commissioner Nasrin Jahan, has been formed.
