Monday, 28 April 2014
Nine bogies of a Dinajpur-bound passenger train from Dhaka derailed on Bangabandhu Bridge over Jamuna River on Sunday night, snapping train communications between Dhaka and northern districts. Locals said the inter-city ‘Drutajan Express’ heading towards Dinajpur town from Kamalapur in Dhaka faced a stormy weather when it reached near Pillar No 7 of Jamuna Bridge around 11:15pm and then nine of its coaches got derailed. However, there was no casualty in the incident. The derailed coaches tilted towards the bridge’s west side, said the sources, adding that a violent storm was sweeping the area when the incident occurred. On information, police and fire service men rushed to the spot. Following the incident, train communication remained suspended between Dhaka and northern districts. Sirajganj deputy commissioner Billah Hossain and superintendent of police (SP) SM Emran Hossain visited the spot.
