Trains run tomorrow

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 31 July 2024

Train services will resume across the country tomorrow (Thursday) with only short-distance commuter, mail and local trains operating during the curfew-relaxed time.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting held with Railway Minister Mohammad Zillul Hakim in the chair at the Rail Bhaban in the capital on Tuesday.
The government kept all train services suspended since the quota reform movement turned violent on July 18.
"The trains whatever distance could be run during the curfew-relaxed time will be operated," said the railway minister.
After the meeting, he told the FE that intercity trains will not be operated now.
Railway Secretary Dr Humayun Ahmed and Bangladesh Railway Director General Sardar Shahadat Ali attended the meeting where other BR senior officials of departments concerned, including operation and law-enforcement agencies, were present.
Regarding which trains will be operated, the DG said a meeting will be held today (Wednesday) for taking the decision. The meeting will discuss related issues of timing and number of trips.
He, however, said after observing the situation in next three days, intercity train services might resume.
The Bangladesh Railway operates 335 trains daily, 59 per cent of which are intercity trains.
