Transport services resume after six-day halt

FE Report | Thursday, 25 July 2024

Transport movement on the long routes of the country resumed on Wednesday as most of the bus operators ran their vehicles after a suspension of six days.
However, the Bangladesh Railway (BR) is yet to start train operation but plans to resume two commuter services between Dhaka and Narayanganj and Tongi during the period of curfew relaxation on Thursday.
A senior official said decision to operate intercity trains will be taken on Thursday after observing overall situation.
Buses from the city's three terminals left for their respective destinations at 9am on Wednesday as the government relaxed the curfew keeping office hours from 10am to 5pm.
Abul Kalam Azad of Mohakhali Bus Terminal told the FE that bus services for all its 42 destinations resumed on the day.
Officials said two trips on the Dhaka-Narayanganj and Dhaka-Tongi-Joydevpur routes will be operated as curfew has been announced to be relaxed from 10am to 5pm.
The BR kept suspended its train operation on Friday following several attacks on trains in its eastern and western zones since the students' movement for reform of the quota system in government jobs turned violent.
Officially, the BR announced the suspension on Saturday for an indefinite period.
The officials said so far the BR has estimated Tk80 million worth of loss of which Tk74 million was in the eastern zone as violent attack on Egarosindhur Express damaged its coaches. Some Tk3.4 million worth of loss was counted in the attack in the western zone.
