Transport workers\\\' strike from June 16

SYLHET, June 11: Sylhet Zila Sarak Paribahan Sramik Union, Truck & Covered van sramik union and Tank lorry sramik union have called indefinite strike from June 16 in the district to raise protest against police harassment and illegal toll collection etc.
A joint emergency meeting of the organisations, held Wednesday night took the decision, informed the Zila Paribahan Sramik union president Selim Ahmed Folik Wednesday.
'We were compelled to call the strike as the authority took no measure even on repeated complaints by the transport workers in the recent past', Selim said. 'On the other hand, Tk 100 in place of Tk 35 in toll from each of the trucks is being realized on the MA Khan bridge on Sylhet-Sunamganj highway, he added.

12 JCD men sent to jail
A court in Sylhet city Wednesday sent 12 JCD men to jail hajat. Earlier the police of Shahporan police station arrested the group from a house at the city's uposahar area Wednesday night as they were holding a meeting secretly.
The arrested include, District JCD Joint Secretary Mizanur Rahman Nesar and city unit joint secretary Shah Rumel. Police raided the house # 22 at B block and arrested the group after their rivals hanged lock on the gate before torching a motor bike kept there, locals informed. They made the attack, allegedly for not getting invitation, sources informed.
Contacted, additional Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Mohammad Rahamat Ullah said police had to arrest the group after they had blasted several crackers during a clash at uposhahar area.  

Food official asked to deposit misappropriated money
A court in Sunamganj Wednesday ordered an official for depositing Tk 8,89,574 which he had misappropriated during his service there in 2010. The official had been at large for long.
The then district controller of food, Sunamganj Md. Mamunur Rashid filed a case accusing Md. Mahbubul Islam, in charge of Sunamganj Sadar upazila food depot in 2010 after a departmental enquiry for misappropriating the said amount, the sale proceed of rice, wheat and empty bags.
Mahbub was also convicted in another case and was sentenced to suffer 5 years RI and was fined Tk 0.9 million (9 lakh), in default to which, to suffer one year 9 months. But, he remained at large as yet, court sources informed. Mahbub hailed from village Bhadur of Ramganj upozila under Lakshmipur district.
