FARIDPUR, Dec 23: The construction work of two bridges which were collapsed in the flood of 2007 under Hamirdi union in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur still not started causing enormous suffering to the inhabitants of the area.
Movement of the village people as well as the transportation of agricultural goods to the bazaars and town, is being hampered in the absence of the bridges.
Reports found that the locations of the two bridges, one is 10-metre and the other 21-metre long, are about 432 and 1627 metres distant from the Dhaka-Barisal highway.
After collapse of the bridges, the road communication of the locality was completely cut-off with Bhanga upazila town. The villagers repeatedly asked the union council chairman for its construction.
Upazila LGED Engineer Khan A Shamim submitted report to LGED Faridpur office and District LGED Executive Engineer Md Nazrul Islam made final report by arranging necessary information.
The report was sent to the office of Project Director (PD) of Emergency Disaster Damage Rehabilitation (sector) Project - 2007 of the LGED headquarters.
But the office of the project director has not taken any necessary step yet. So, the economic activities of Hamirdi union has about to been halted.
The Hamirdi union council office building is situated at Munsurabad bazaar, where there is a primary school, a community clinic hospital, a high school, a college and a big market. But the communication gap deprived the local people of the facilities.
Hamirdi Union Council Chairman Md Delwar Hossain told this correspondent that to energise the economical life of the area, there is no alternative to the bridges.
