FE Report
Transshipment of goods through Ashuganj port in Bangladesh to the Indian state of Tripura is likely to start from July 16.
"We are expecting the first consignment to be delivered through Ashuganj port on the 16th of next month", President of Indo-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) Abdul Matlub Ahmad said at a function in the city.
The function was organised by IBCCI on the occasion of a visit by a high level business delegation from the Indian state of Meghalaya in the city.
With the commencement of operation, Ashuganj will be the second transshipment point and fifth port of call in Bangladesh. New Delhi in a reciprocal step has declared Shilghat as port of call on the Indian side.
"The protocol has already been signed between the two countries regarding the transshipment through Ashuganj port", said a senior Indian High Commission official in Dhaka.
"However, the two parties are still working on some formalities including the customs issues", said Suhil Singhal, who is the First Secretary in the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh added.
