Friday, 10 October 2014
A trawler with more than 100 passengers on board capsized in Meghna River in Noakhali district on Friday afternoon. Police and locals said most of the passengers have been rescued but an unspecified number missing since the over-crowded trawler ‘Rebeka’ overturned around 12:20pm near Chairman Ghat (terminal) in coastal Hatiya Upazila. Quoting survivours and witnesses, Hatiya Police Station OC Syed Fazle Rabbi said the vessel, coming from Nolchira Ghat, was carrying over 100 passengers when it sank around 12:20pm. Hearing the screams of the passengers, locals rushed to the spot in speedboats and motorboats right after the incident and rescued some of the passengers, Fazle Rabbi said. Being informed, police rushed in and joined rescue efforts. Neither the police officer nor the survivours and the locals could exactly say how many passengers remained missing. ‘It is difficult to say right now how many are still missing,’ OC Rabbi said, according to a news agency.
