Tremor jolts parts of country

Wednesday, 12 August 2009

An earthquake jolted the capital and the Chittagong and Sylhet regions at 2:55:42 hours Tuesday. The earthquake that lasted for few seconds had struck the Andaman Islands with the maximum intensity -- 7.8 on the Richter Scale.
Awakened from their sleep following the quake, many panicked people ran out of the high-rise buildings.
Powerful earthquakes just over 10 minutes apart rattled Japan and India Tuesday, triggering panic on fears of a tsunami in the Andaman Islands and injuring more than 100 people southwest of Tokyo.
The unrelated quakes struck in the early hours, shutting down Japanese bullet train services and a nuclear power plant and causing a landslide that closed a major highway near the Japanese capital.
The epicentre of the quake was 980 kilometres south-southeast of Bangladesh Seismic Centre at Agargaon in the city, the Met Office said.
At around 4:00am Tuesday, the Met Office issued the tsunami alert for India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh, but the alert was withdrawn at about 6:40am.
"According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre and Japan Meteorological Agency, devastating tsunami is unlikely to affect the coast of Bangladesh as the expected time of 06:40 am (BST) Tuesday was over," said a Met Office bulletin.
It said: "There is no signal for the maritime ports of Bangladesh."
