Trial in RU BCL leader Faruk murder case yet to begin

RU Correspondent | Tuesday, 4 November 2014

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, Nov 3: Though four years have elapsed since the murder of Faruk Hossain, a former student of Mathematics Department of Rajshahi University (RU) and also hall unit leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in February 2010, the trial in the case is yet to be started.
Police have already charged 110 Jamaat-Shibir activists, including Jamaat chief Motiur Rahman Nizami in this connection.
BCL university unit former general secretary Mazedul Islam Opu who had lodged the case said the law enforcers did not take the case seriously, while, some BCL leaders and activists, wishing anonymity, alleged that police were making the delay in exchange for bribes from the Jamaat-Shibir men.
"Actually, it did not take hundred people to kill a single person," said a criminal law expert. Police might have a motive to harass the accused and make money in the process, they said.
Several legal experts in Rajshahi judges court said accusation of a large number of people "destroys the merit of a case" and "weaken it". They suspected a motive behind the charging of so many people in the case and blamed this for delay. It will take a lot of time to frame charges against the accused.
Earlier, on February 8 night, 2010 Faruk was killed in a bloody clash between the activists of ICS and BCL at Shah Makhdum (SM) hall. His body was dumped into a manhole. Then Mazedul Islam Opu filed a murder case with Motihar police station, accusing 35 named and 29 unnamed Jamaat-Shibir men.
