Trial of Nazmul Huda, his wife begins

Tuesday, 10 July 2007

The trial of former communications minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Nazmul Huda along with his wife Sigma Huda in a graft case began Monday at the special makeshift court with deposition by the prosecution witness, reports UNB.
Judge AK Roy of the fast-track court trying high-profile corruption suspects recorded the depositions made by deputy director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) who filed the case as prosecution witness.
The detained Huda couple was produced before the court amid tight security.
On March 21, the case was filed with Dhanmondi police station accusing them of taking Tk 24 million (2.40 crore) in bribe from Mir Zakir Hossain, the owner of a construction firm.
On June 4, the ACC official, after investigation, submitted the charge sheet to the court in this connection.
On June 21, the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's court transferred the case to the special judge's court at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban for quick disposal.
Meanwhile, another special court of M Ashraf Hossain, after rejecting the defence plea for discharging the graft case faced by detained ex-BNP lawmaker Manjurul Ahsan Munshi and his family, framed charges against them.
The court fixed Tuesday for commencing the speedy trial with the deposition by the prosecution witnesses.
Munshi and his wife, both standing in the dock, pleaded 'not guilty' and sought justice when the court read out the charges against them.
Munshi's two accused sons-Rizviul Ahsan Munshi and Rezwanul Ahsan Minshi-have been dispensed with personal appearance to stand trial 'until further order of the court', court sources said.
