Monday, 19 January 2015

The man whose powerful lyrics kept the freedom fighters' morale high during our Liberation War, is no more. Govinda Halder, best known for writing songs like, 'mora ekti phulke bachabo bole juddho kori' and other immortal songs, breathed his last in Kolkata at the age of 84. His songs, broadcast from Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra in 1971, bolstered the nation's resolve for freedom.
Lyricist Gobinda Halder was born in Bongaon, West Bengal in August 1930. After finishing school in Bongaon, he did his graduation and post-graduation in Bangla from Calcutta University. Later, he joined the income tax department and retired in July 1988. He wrote nearly 3,500 semi-classical, folk, baul, kirtan and modern Bangla songs before glaucoma impaired his sight. He received Friends of Liberation War Award in 2012.
Halder is no more but he will be remembered for his invaluable contribution to our war of liberation.
