Trivedi new Indian high commissioner to BD
FE REPORT | Tuesday, 28 April 2026
The Indian government has appointed former union minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dinesh Trivedi as its next high commissioner to Bangladesh, marking a departure from the country's long-standing diplomatic convention.
The announcement was made on Monday by India's Ministry of External Affairs, which said Trivedi, 75, is expected to take up his post in Dhaka shortly.

He will replace Pranay Verma, who is set to move to Brussels as India's ambassador to the European Union.
Trivedi's appointment comes at a time when New Delhi and Dhaka are seeking to deepen cooperation in trade, connectivity and strategic sectors.
However, his selection is considered significant as Bangladesh has traditionally been one of India's most sensitive and high-profile diplomatic postings, usually assigned to senior officers of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS).
Trivedi brings a distinctly political background to the role.
He served as India's railway minister between 2011 and 2012and as minister of state for health and family welfare from 2009 to 2011 under former prime minister Manmohan Singh.
