FARIDPUR, Nov 8: Trucks regularly enter Faridpur town during the daytime especially between 8 in the morning and 12 noon, despite a ban on their entry from 8.00 am to 12 midnight. This creates serious traffic jams and problems for commuters.
Everyday, a large number of loaded trucks ply through the town playing havoc with the traffic movement and compounding misery of other vehicles and rickshaws. There are also reports that many trucks overload to twice their stated capacity with law enforcers turning a blind eye to the phenomena. Also, the movement of heavily loaded trucks causes damage to the roads according to the Executive Engineer of Faridpur Municipality.
Although many have lodged strong complaints with the law enforcers they say no action is being taken much to their despair, says Abul Hashem of Niltuly. Housewife Rahima Begum of the same area complained that in addition to creating congestion on the city streets, the honking of hydraulic horns by the trucks causes serious noise pollution which irritates her children traveling to and from their educational institutions.
Mayor of Faridpur Municipality Sheikh Mahatab Ali said trucks were entering the town during the prohibited time due to utter negligence in duty by the traffic police adding that immediate measures have to be taken so that the drivers of those vehicles comply with the ban in the greater interest of the residents. Faridpur Municipality, he reminded, had banned entry of trucks from 8.00 am to 12 midnight in 2004 to remove the sufferings of the townspeople.
Denying the allegation of negligence, traffic inspector Nurul Islam said they only allow entry of some public transports including trucks on what he called "emergency basis".
