Truth Commission expected within a month: Law Adviser

Friday, 21 March 2008

Law Adviser Hassan Ariff Thursday said the much publicised Truth Commission will be constituted within a month, reports UNB
The Truth Commission is reportedly designed to pardon corruption suspects including businessmen and politicians from imprisonment, provided they appear before the commission to confess their guilt and return their ill-gotten wealth to the government.
'This Commission can be termed Accountability Commission,' the Adviser told a weekly press briefing at his ministry.
He said draft of the proposed Commission is being prepared examining rules of similar commissions that have been established in several other countries.
Asked if such commission would be an impediment to normal judicial system, Ariff said it would not create any impediment to or discrepancy with the judiciary.
Asked about formation of National Security Council, the Adviser said the matter is still at the discussion level. He said the Law Ministry has not yet received any draft of it for vetting from the Home Ministry.
He said if it is approved by the Council of Advisers, the National Security Council will make recommendations on dealing with any national crises like maintaining law and order, food security, etc.
