Truth Commission to start working within 10 days: Law Adviser

The Truth and Accountability Commission (TAC) is expected to be operational within the next 10 days, Law Adviser AF Hassan Ariff said Wednesday, reports bdnews24.com.
"The process of forming the commission is in the final stage. We hope it will start its activities in seven to ten days," he told reporters at the Secretariat.
The cabinet approved the Right to Voluntary Disclosure Ordinance 2008, to create the commission, on May 25, and the President promulgated the ordinance on June 5. The Cabinet proposed a number of amendments on July 6.
According to the ordinance, TAC will run for five months with three members. The President will appoint one of the three members as chairman of the commission.
Asked who would be its chairman the Adviser said: "Everything will be announced within 10 days."
The government has appointed 26 officials and staffers on deputation for TAC, and established its office on Minto Road.
According to the ordinance provision, anybody already convicted of graft, with a sentence of two years or less, will get the scope of leniency, if he confesses and returns any illegal earnings within a given timeframe.
Those eligible to be members of the commission are retired chief justices, retired justices of the Appellate Division, retired army officials ranked major general or above, retired government officials ranked as secretary or equal designation.
