TU leaders welcome BKMEA move to raise workers' wages

FE Report | Monday, 11 August 2008

The leaders of the garment workers welcomed Sunday the decision of the manufacturers of knitwear to increase the wage of their workers and expressed the hope that the owners of woven garment units would also implement the same for their workers ahead of holy month of Ramadan.

Country's knitwear manufacturers Saturday announced that they would raise the wages of their workers between 15 and 20 per cent to help around a million workers cope with rising prices of food and other essential commodities.

The trade union leaders also said the garment units should not delay the implementation of the decision relating to enhanced wages since the workers are finding it hard to cope with rising prices.

Amirul Hoque, general secretary of National Garment Workers Federation told the FE that the move taken by the knit manufacturers was praiseworthy but it needed immediate implementation.

Nazma Akter, another leader of garment workers welcomed the decision but said the hike should have been more considering the increase in the prices of essentials.

Nasrin Akter, another leader said: "We want further hike as our workers have been suffering a lot following the price hike."

She, however, welcomed the move taken by the knit manufacturers saying that it will help in building good relationship between the workers and owners of garment factories.
