Tuba owner Delwar gets bail
Friday, 1 August 2014
The High Court has granted bail to Tuba Group Managing Director Delwar Hossain in a case filed over a fire incident at Tazreen Fashions Limited in Savar that killed over 116 garment workers two ywars ago. Tazreen Fashions is part of the Tuba Group. The bench of Justices Syed AB Mahmudul Huq and Nazrul Islam Talukder granted the bail on July 24, 2014, but it became known on Thursday, even as a hunger strike by workers of five Tuba Group garment factories was in progress in Dhaka city. More than 300 workers are observing fast-unto-death in the premises of Tuba Group’s five RMG units, housed in the 12-storey ‘Hossain Market’ in the city’s Uttar Badda, since July 27 for payment of unpaid salary and Eid bonus. State counsels, however, could not confirm if the copy of the HC order had been issued. Deputy Attorney General Shafiul Bashar Bhandary said on Friday morning: ‘The court has granted 2-month bail to Delwar in the Tazreen fire case issuing a rule that asked why he won’t be given permanent bail.’ Asked whether Hossain is going to be released, Shafiul Bashar said: ‘He won’t be freed without a written order. I can’t confirm if the written order has been issued or not though the bail was granted on July 24.’ Meanwhile, the agitating Tuba Group workers have kept Laili Begum, mother-in-law of Delwar, confined to a packaging room on the 8th floor of Hossain Market since July 25. She has been surviving on the foods and clothes provided by the workers. Workers' only request to Laili Begum was that she should persuade the chairperson of Tuba Group, her daughter Mahmuda Aktar Mita, to soon clear their dues, according to bdnews24.com.
