Turmeric can detect bombs!

Monday, 28 March 2011

MASSACHUSETTS, Mar 27 (Commodity Online): Researchers at the University of Massachusetts have discovered that turmeric-based sensors are capable of detecting presence of explosives even to the tune of 80 parts per billion in a given sample. The scientists merged turmeric with a vicious polymer and spread it onto glass plates. When an LED was shone on to the plate, the scientists found the presence of explosives made the emitted light from plates to be dim in comparison with a normal scenario. By varying the turmeric levels, scientists can detect a range of explosives, according to BBC. Such sensors would be cheap and easy to deploy.
