The turnaround time of vessels at the country's premier Chittagong port fell further in November, thanks to speedy handling of export-import cargo.
An important indicator for measuring port's efficiency, the turnaround time or stay time that begins from the arrival of vessels at the outer anchorage and ends with sailing-out averaged 3.20 days in November. It was 3.41 days in October.
Port officials told the FE that the turnaround time had fallen despite the fact that port operation remained suspended for around 10 hours during the cyclonic storm Sidr that hit the southern coastal districts on November 15.
"The turnaround time could fall below 3.0 days in November, but it did not happen because of the natural calamities," said one senior port official.
The turn around time averaged 3.48 days in September.
However, the handling of containers by the Chittagong port also rose during November this year. Some 84,100 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) containers were handled in November against 82,154 containers in October.
The number of feeder vessels called at the premier port also rose to some extent in November this year.
A total of 84 vessels called at the port November against 82 in October.
While talking to the FE, CPA Terminal Manager Zahid Hussain said that an effective monitoring of the port operation contributed to the improvement in port activities.
"We took every necessary step when required. Concerted efforts by the all departments also played a role in bringing down the ships' stay time," said Zahid Hussain.
Port officials claimed that enhancement of space and commissioning of new port yards had also helped cut the turnaround time.
