FE Report | Tuesday, 10 March 2009
Dhaka stocks closed mixed Monday after sharp gain on the previous day with the turnover nearing Tk 5.0 billion mark.
Beginning in a buoyant note, trading at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) fluctuated throughout the session, as the benchmark index rose about 31 points in the first half an hour but later started to decline.
The DSE General Index (DGEN) -benchmark index- closed at 2648.31 with a gain of 2.47 points. The All Shares Price Index (DSI) ended at 2204.29 with a rise of 1.14 points and the DSE-20 blue chip index finished at 2147.46 with a loss of 18.30 points.
Stock prices of the banking sector, which helped the market rise sharply on Sunday, fell on profit taking while insurance, power and energy issues shined on the day.
"Overall market tone is positive today as continued higher turnover indicated that the investors started to return to the market," said a merchant banker.
The day's total turnover rose to Tk 4.93 billion, highest in five months, against Tk 4.29 billion on the back of huge transactions of Summit Power, Shinepukur Ceramics and Beximco Pharma.
Out of a total of 253 issues traded, 141 gained, 108 declined and four remained unchanged. The market capitalisation remained steady at Tk 1.02 trillion.
Summit Power was the top turnover leader with shares worth Tk 245.48 million traded, followed by Shinepukur Ceramics Tk 164.38 million, Beximco Pharma Tk 152.50 million traded.
