Twelve of a family suffer burn injury in gas fire

KERANIGANJ, Apr 1 (UNB): Twelve members of a family suffered severe burn injuries as a fire erupted from the gas burner at a house at Kaliganj Telghat in South Keraniganj area Wednesday morning.
Local people said the kitchen of Motahar Hossain's house went up in flames with a "big bang" when his wife Lufta Begum fired gas-lighter to ignite the oven at about 6:30am.
"The fire soon engulfed the other adjacent rooms of the house, burning down valuables worth over Tk 0.4 million (4 lakh) and injuring 12 members of the family," says a spot account of the blaze.
Watching billows of smoke, local people rushed in, rescued the injured and put out the blaze within half an hour.
The injured were admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital from where Motahar Hossain (65), Lutfa Bagum (55), and their daughter Liza (13), and son Moshiur Rahman Khokan were shifted to City Hospital in "critical condition". The injured who were admitted to DMCH are Motahar's mother Mariam Begum (85), son Hamidul (28), daughter-in-law Tinni Akter (22), daughter Mahmuda Akter (35), grandchildren Lipa Akter (12), and Omi Akter (7), and Abu Bakar (3), and nephew Enamul Haq (26).
