CHATTOGRAM, Aug 22: A team of policemen allegedly tortured two children after tying them to an iron pole and cut off hair of one of them on charges of theft in Chattogram city on Saturday night.
Three constables from the police team were withdrawn after a video showing them inflicting torture on the children went viral on the social media.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Krishna Pad Roy on Sunday evening formed a two-member committee to investigate the incident.
The three police constables- Md Mehdi, Md Mazhar and Md Ehsan - were attached to Mansurbada Metropolitan police line.
According to locals and witnesses, a team of policemen chased after three children from the side of Lalkhan Bazar Government Primary School in Lalkhan Bazar area under Khulshi police station and at one stage they managed to catch two of the children from Jilapir Pahar area while the other got away.
The policemen tied the two children- identified as Siam and Helal- to an iron pole and gave them a beating. They cut off Siam's hair slightly.
Later the children were handed over to their guardians.
Santosh Kumar Chakma, officer-in-charge of Khulshi thana, said there was a complaint lodged with the police that these children were involved in theft in the area.
"However, they (police team) did not inform the police station concerned or anyone higher," he said, adding for this reason, following order of the CMP Commissioner they have been withdrawn.
He added a two-member investigation committee has been formed with CMP Additional Police Commissioner (Administration) as its head.
