Two city corpns earn Tk 228.7m from lease of 19 cattle markets

FE Report | Wednesday, 3 July 2019

The two city corporations have earned Tk 228.7 million from the lease of 19 makeshift cattle markets for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha.
A total of 25 cattle markets have been selected to be leased out this Eid.
Of them, 14 are under the jurisdiction of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) while the rest 11 are within the area of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Each of the city corporations will go for re-tender for three markets for which they have not got any response in the first round.
DNCC has 11 makeshift and one permanent cattle market that is in Gabtoli.
DSCC sources said they have already leased out 11 cattle markets from where they have earned Tk 81.8 million. The amount is Tk 21.1 million higher than the quoted price.
The minimum price for the rest three markets is Tk 18.2 million.
On the other hand, DNCC has leased out eight cattle markets from where they have earned Tk146.9 million.
Talking to the FE, DNCC chief estate officer Aminul Islam said they had 12 markets for lease.
But they cancelled one market at Uttara (Section 10) because of objection from local people and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) as it will create traffic jam.
Only one of the 11 markets is inside the main city that is Tejgaon, he added.
He said their main consideration in selecting spots for cattle markets is to facilitate buying and selling of sacrificial animals during the religious festival. Profit is not their goal, he added.
"We have not got any bidder for three markets because of high price. Bidders compete among themselves and take lease at a higher price than our quoted price sometimes making loss," he said.
If any bidder does not pay the full money, their advance deposit which is one-third of the final price, will be forfeited.
This year the highest price is for the Uttara sector 15 market Tk 48.5 million which is almost double the city corporation price.
Last year the price for Tejgaon market was Tk 750 million.
DNCC will go for re-tender for the three markets for which the bidders did not respond and these are - Tejgaon, Banorupa and Uttarkhan.
The eight markets are -Uttara sector 15, Mirpur section 6, Khilkhet 300 feet, Bhatara (Saidnagar), Mirpur DOHS, Badda Eastern Housing and Kawla-Shialdanga.
On the other hand, DSCC has all the markets in public places as always.
These are - Meradia Bazar area, Jigatola-Hazaribagh playground area, Samsabad of ward 32, Sanirakhra and Dania playground area, Gopibagh and Kamlapur, Kawartek playground, Dhupkhola playground, Postagola Shashanghat area, Kamrangirchar, Rahmatganj playground and Uttar Shahjahanpur rail gate area.
Last year, DSCC floated tender for 15 cattle markets from which they got response for only seven markets.
DSCC earned Tk 79.9 million last year from seven makeshift markets.
The rest eight markets were given as khas to the same bidders from where they earned Tk 40 million.
The minimum price for the eight markets was Tk 51 million.
