Two more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Monday morning, raising the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 133 this year, reports UNB.
During the period, 866 more patients were hospitalised with viral fever, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Of them, 170 dengue patients were admitted in hospital under Dhaka North City Corporation while 148 were hospitalized in Dhaka South City Corporation.
Some 2,772 dengue patients are receiving treatment in different hospitals across the country.
A total of 24,900 dengue cases have been reported since January 1, 2024. Last year, 1,705 people lost their lives due to dengue, making it the deadliest year on record.
The DGHS recorded 321,179 dengue cases and 3, 18,749 recoveries last year.
Another report adds, the number of dengue patients and fatalities continues to spike across the country this year too with hospitals struggling to provide treatment to the growing number of patients due to insufficient facilities. Experts fear that the dengue situation may worsen in October when the hospitals and clinics are already overwhelmed with dengue patients. Till September 22, the death toll from the mosquito-borne disease stood at 131 with 24,034 cases.
Two months back, experts warned about the possibility of severe dengue outbreak in September, yet there have been no visible efforts from the authorities concerned. Concern is growing among people as October is likely to see even worse dengue situation.
Visiting Dhaka Medical College and Mugda Medical College and Hospital, it was found that these hospitals have been struggling to accommodate the dengue patients and setting up additional beds on the corridors to provide treatment.
