Members of the banned student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League staged a brief flash rally at Dhaka University's Raju Memorial Sculpture early Saturday morning. Police detained two individuals, including a Chhatra League leader, in connection with the incident.
The detainees were identified as Farhan Tanvir Nasif, organising secretary of Sir A.F. Rahman Hall unit of Chhatra League, and Rubel, a microbus driver.
According to eyewitnesses, around 10 to 12 individuals gathered at the base of the Raju Sculpture around 6:30 am, displayed banners, and brought out a short procession.
They quickly left the scene in a black microbus after completing the programme.
Police detained two individuals from another microbus present at the scene and later took them to the police station for questioning.
Dhaka University Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed that one of the detainees is a university student. He said they were taken to Shahbagh Police Station in the morning.
Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Masud Alam, said that two individuals were detained during the flash rally at the Raju Sculpture area. He added that authorities are verifying whether Farhan Tanvir Nasif has any prior cases filed against him and that a case may be filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act if applicable.
