Two killed in Ctg landslides

CHATTOGRAM, Aug 27: A seven-month-old girl and her father were killed and two others were injured in a landslide due to a heavy rainfall in IW Colony area at Sholoshahar in Chattogram on Saturday night.
The father-daughter duo was identified as Md Shohel (35) and his seven-month-old daughter Bibi Jannat.
Locals said a part of the hill fell on a house in the area, causing the death of them and injury of two others.
On information, members of fire service and civil defence rushed to the spot and rescued four persons and sent them to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH). However, the on duty doctors declared Md Shohel and his daughter dead after reaching the hospital while two other injured persons were admitted to the hospital.
It has been raining for three consecutive days from Friday in Chattogram and adjoining districts including Cox's Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari. It caused immense sufferings for the people of the area.
The local meteorological department recorded a total of 124 mm of rainfall in last 24 hours from 3 pm Saturday to 3 pm Sunday. The heavy rainfall is likely to continue until Monday (today).
Meanwhile, with the heavy rainfall forecast in Chattogram, the weathermen also warned about fresh landslides in the hilly areas.
The loading and unloading of containers and cargoes at the Chattogram port was also hampered on Sunday.
Besides, Sunday's HSC examination was started one hour later due to the waterlogging in Chattogram. The examination started at 11 am instead of 10 am and continued till 2 pm in the area.
The road communications of Chattogram with Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Cox's Bazar has been disrupted due to the landslide and rainwater on the roads on Sunday. Arakan Road, Hathazari Road and Raojan Road have been flooded due to the rain and logged water.
Besides, the Chattohgram-Khagrachari Road was blocked due to the landslide on the road on Sunday. Moreover, low-lying areas in Chattogram city were waterlogged due to the continuous rain from Friday morning. The downpour disrupted the normal life of the city people.
