FE Report
Police in a drive arrested two people from Tongi, Gazipur on Thursday night for their alleged involvement in the robbery attempt on Bangladesh Commerce Bank Ltd's (BCBL) Ashulia branch at Kathgora.
The law-enforcers claimed that the arrested duo - Babul Sardar (32) and Mintu Pradhan (28) - were directly involved in the bank robbery that killed eight people, including the branch manager.
Besides, the two were actively connected with the banned militant outfit Jamaa'tul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
Following the arrest of the duo, DIG of Dhaka Range Mahfuzul Haq Nuruzzaman arranged a press conference at the DMP (Dhaka Metropolitan Police) Media Centre, where he said police arrested them from a rented house in Tongi's Komla area on Thursday night.
He said the law-enforcers also found a large number of 'extremist' books and pamphlets of JMB and Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, from them. "We suspect they are members of the militant group."
The DIG also said the Thursday night's drive was launched on the basis of information gathered from the people, caught soon after the robbery. "We also recovered papers of the burnt motorcycle, used in the heist, from the house."
